The Lost Son

Jesus often told stories, called parables,
to teach about God.

He told the following story to show how much God loves everyone.

There was once a man who had two sons.

The younger son said to his father, “I want my share of your property now.” So the Father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.

The younger son then packed all he had and moved to another country.

When he arrived in the new country he put on wild parties and wasted all the money he had been given.

Just as his money ran out, a great famine came over the land and the son was in serious trouble.

He managed to get a job feeding pigs.

He became so hungry even the pods he was feeding the pigs look good to eat. But no one gave him anything.

Eventually he came to his senses and thought to himself, ‘Even my father’s servants have enough food to eat and here I am with nothing to eat. I will go home and tell my father that I have wronged both God and him. I am no longer worthy to be his son, but perhaps he will take me back as a servant.’

With this he headed off home to his father.

And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him.

Filled with love and compassion, his
father ran to him, hugged him and kissed him.

That night, the father put on a huge party to celebrate his son’s return.
He placed on him the finest robe he had, he put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. The father rejoiced, “My son was lost, but now he is found.” So the party began!
